May 2026: Dr. Karsten Pfeffer at the Desert Architecture Forum: Innovative Voided Slabs for Sustainable Construction

Innovation in construction begins where the use of materials is rethought. Dr. Karsten Pfeffer, co-founder of Unidome, has been developing sustainable and material-efficient solutions for concrete construction for decades. In doing so, he combines scientific research with entrepreneurial experience and contributes to the advancement of resource-efficient construction methods.

From co-founding Cobiax to the development of internationally used voided slab systems at Unidome, Dr. Pfeffer has played a key role in technologies that reduce material consumption in reinforced concrete construction and, as a result, enable significant CO₂ savings. Over a period of around 25 years, these developments have already helped save several hundred thousand tonnes of CO₂ worldwide.

In recognition of his work, Dr. Pfeffer received the German Material Efficiency Award in 2010, among other distinctions. Today, Unidome technologies are used in more than 30 countries and contribute to more economical and sustainable construction methods.

Against the backdrop of growing requirements for CO₂ reduction, resource efficiency, and sustainable construction, his work demonstrates the potential that intelligent structural and slab systems hold for the future of construction.
