Building within existing structures is more than just an alternative to new construction—it is a key lever for sustainable development in the construction industry. We were able to apply this exact approach in a recent Unidome project.
The focus was on transforming an existing building while strictly adhering to heritage conservation requirements and, in particular, sustainability aspects. It became clear that preserving and intelligently developing existing structures offers enormous potential for reducing resource consumption and CO2 emissions.
Continuing to use load-bearing structures significantly reduces the need for raw materials and avoids large amounts of embodied energy.
In addition to ecological factors, economic and social aspects were also taken into account—from life-cycle costs to user quality.
Projects involving existing buildings require a high degree of adaptability, as unforeseen conditions often only become apparent during the planning or construction process.
The project impressively demonstrates that sustainable building within existing structures with Unidome is not only possible but can also set the course for the future of the construction industry.
