September 2024: Sustainable Unidome application at Zeiss high-tech site in Jena

The new Zeiss high-tech location in Jena is taking shape: Office, production, technical and warehouse space is being created on an area of over 110,000 square meters, which will provide around 2,000 jobs in the future. A large part of the floors of this outstanding project is realized using sustainable Unidome void former technology.

By using Unidome concrete shapers, this construction project can save more than 3,500 cubic meters of concrete. This corresponds to a load reduction of around 8,750 tons and a CO₂ saving of 730 tons. The plastic void formers used act as lost formwork in the reinforced concrete flat slabs and displace concrete specifically in areas where it is not statically required. In this way, material efficiency is combined with high load capacity — a decisive contribution to sustainability, climate protection and modern construction.

This project impressively demonstrates how voided slabs not only provide technical and economic benefits, but can also make a significant contribution to reducing the ecological footprint.

The Unidome Group would like to thank all project participants for their successful cooperation:

  • Client: Carl Zeiss AG — ZEISS Group
  • Architecture: Nething Generalplaner GmbH
  • Engineering office: Statix GmbH
  • Construction company: Riedel Bau AG — Riedel Bau Group
